UNICEF states that 42% of Kenyans live under the poverty line and one quarter of the population are illiterate. Our goal is to build two classrooms and an essential dormitory facility at two schools in Kajiado South - one of the poorest sub-counties of Kenya and a marginalised and largely impoverished rural community, occupied by around 9,000 Maasai people.By focussing on these two schools, our project outcomes will help to directly address two main regional problems that are contributing to local Maasai children not completing their education. These are the lack of inclusive, affordable schools and unsustainable travel distances to and from schools – to receive an education, 64% of children must presently walk for over 10km every day - across unpredictable terrain with hazards including wild animals and flooding. In support of the UN Sustainable Development Goal #4 ‘Ensure inclusive and quality education for all…’, the aim of this project is to simply help more local Maasai children to complete their education. This will help to increase the currently very poor literacy levels within the local Maasai community, which will improve their future social, economic and health prospects.
