Help Holocaust Survivors in Their Healing Journey
Holocaust survivors have overcome great trials in the past but their journey towards healing isn’t an easy one. Thousands of them are relying solely on meager pensions and having to make the choice every day between buying food and other essentials like medicine.
Sheba Medical Center understands that these survivors have special physical, emotional, and psychological needs that go beyond the natural old age. This is why we have created a special program that provides care and support for them.
The program began with the efforts of Hilda Rejwan, a retired occupational health care professional. In her 30 years of experience in the health care industry, she was struck with the lack of formal government assistance given to Holocaust survivors. She knew that her volunteer efforts were not enough so she asked help from our hospital and her idea was welcomed with open arms.
Today, we have treated 900 survivors by providing them with a dedicated caregiver who visits every day. These caregivers go through comprehensive training to learn how the physical and emotional trauma sustained during the Holocaust can cause lifelong detrimental effects.
The program is currently offered in three hospital wards: orthopedic, general surgery, and internal medicine. The hospital hopes that with more donations, the program will be offered in other departments as well.
All donations received will be used in training more caregivers, providing the needs of our current patients, and reaching out to more survivors.
“Sheba Medical Center, the nation’s hospital, carries both a public and moral commitment to the Holocaust survivors who live in our midst. It is our duty as a nation to ensure they live in dignity and want for nothing, all the more so when it comes to the most important thing we have, our health.”
- Prof. Yitshak Kreiss, Director General, Sheba Medical Center
What goes around truly comes around. When Sheba Medical Center was established in 1948, the first donations that we received are from Holocaust survivors so it is just fitting to give back through this program.
We believe that they should not only be honored on remembrance days. Their stories must be heard and their needs must be met. It is our moral duty to give them the respect and love that they deserve.
